Louisiana Guide to Supports & Services for Individuals with Disabilities, Elders and Their Families Affected by Disasters – Statewide list of disaster resources as of 10/2022.
Disability Assessment & Coordination Entity (DACE)
Why is there a need for DACE? GOHSEP states: “According to the National Council on Independent Living, “disaster-related needs of disabled people are overlooked or ignored. Disabled people face often insurmountable barriers during and after disasters, resulting in disabled people and older adults being two to four times more likely to die or be seriously injured during a disaster.”
Louisiana has seen this far too often, being plagued with back-to-back incidents, especially when the landscape of communities are dismantled and the evacuation often yields lengthier displacements from their home and normal support systems. After these incidents where citizens had to evacuate to protect life and safety, vulnerable individuals were discovered in shelters and disaster-impacted areas. Vulnerable populations include, but not limited to individuals with access and functional needs, mobility issues, chronic health conditions, deaf, blind, hard of hearing, behavioral health issues, etc.
What is the ultimate goal of DACE? GOHSEP’s goal is to build a statewide plan and establish, maintain, and sustain an active network of resources to support people with disabilities before, during, and after disasters. Click here to view DACE Outreach flyer
