We are so excited that you have come to learn more about #ThinkABILITY. In July of 2014, Families Helping Families of Jefferson new Young Professional Leadership Council met for the first time. The purpose of the group is to broaden the reach of the FHF Board of Directors by engaging young professionals with and without disabilities to promote Families Helping Families of Jefferson and bring a younger perspective and voice to disability issues. Our intent is to grow future board members while building leadership skills. Our group is small but mighty. Five remarkable young women joined the group and represent a variety of backgrounds, but all have a passion for promoting a positive identity of people with disabilities. The group consist of an Occupational Therapist, Foster Care Case Manager, Social Worker, Early Childhood Instructor and Membership Executive. Remarkably 2 of the young women did internships at the Mississippi and Rhode Island PTI’s. The members are either individuals with disabilities, siblings or other immediate family members of individuals with disabilities and/or provide services to individuals with disabilities. Collectively they bring hundreds of hours of volunteer work with various disability related groups.
The group was charged with creating an event that would bring positive attention to individuals with disabilities. They all agreed they had issues with the way individuals with disabilities were often perceived. After a lot of discussions and an internet survey, they decided to create an event around the great things individuals with disabilities accomplish every day. It was decided that younger people follow social media and thought the campaign should do the same. The campaign was named #ThinkABILITY and was launched on March 1, 2015 and run for the entire month of March.
