Parent Leadership in Educational Policy

Parent Leadership in Educational Policy

April 24th Application Deadline for the 2013 Annual Online Policy Course

Louisiana Parent Training and Information Center wants to help parent advocates grow their ability to teach those who make decisions about the education of children with disabilities. Greater parent involvement in advising those who determine policy can help to create effective policies that guide services available to children with disabilities. They can’t know what will and won’t work for our children, if we the parents don’t tell them. But many parents want information about who to tell and how to do the telling.

We are offering a series of 8 webinars this May to a limited number of parents who are committed to improving educational services for all Louisiana children with disabilities, age’s birth – twenty-six. Eight webinars will be provided on Tuesday and Thursday nights, from 7:45 PM – 9:00 PM during the time period from Tuesday, May 7th –Thursday, May 30th, 2013. A link to an online application will be found on http://www.familieshelp.wpengine.com/. Application deadline is Thursday, April 25th. Accepted applicants will be notified by Thursday, May 2nd. Guest speakers involved in educational policies will join the LaPTIC Project Director as faculty. Participants will be assigned homework and are asked to commit to participate in at least one meeting of a policy making board in the six months following the last webinar.

If you are a parent advocate who wants to know more about how decisions are made when it comes to the educational services provided to all children with disabilities, so that you can feel confident and ready to effectively participate in increasing appropriate policies and services, this is the course for you! Participants will exit this course better informed about what policy is; how it impacts the ability of Louisiana parents to get appropriate services, who are the decision makers; where, when and how decisions about educational policies are made; the variety of ways parents can effectively inform policy decisions.
